Growing With Jesus

Real growth doesn’t come from pressure or speed; it comes from staying connected.

A peaceful park scene at sunset shows a person sitting on a bench under a large tree, reading a Bible. The tree’s glowing roots are visible beneath the ground, symbolizing spiritual grounding and steady growth. In the background, people walk along a path with city buildings in soft focus, creating a calm, reflective atmosphere that represents abiding in faith and growing with Jesus.
“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith…” — Colossians 2:6–7 (NKJV)

Staying Connected

Paul is writing to people who were already following Jesus but were beginning to feel pressure to add more—more rules, more effort, more proof they were “doing it right.” Instead of pushing them to upgrade their faith, Paul brings them back to where they started. He reminds them that the way they began with Christ is the same way they continue—by receiving Him, not performing for Him.

This echoes Jesus’ own words in John 15: “Abide in Me… for without Me you can do nothing.” Paul’s call to “walk in Him” is the same invitation Jesus gives: stay connected. Paul’s language—rooted, built up, established—matches Jesus’ picture of a branch drawing life from the vine. Both passages point to the same truth: growth flows from remaining with Him, not from trying to produce results on our own.

Depth Over Speed

There’s often unspoken pressure to grow fast—to push beyond your readiness or pretend you’re already where you want to be. And when growth feels slow, it’s easy to assume something is wrong. But Scripture paints a different picture: healthy things don’t rush; they take root.

Jesus says a branch “cannot bear fruit of itself.” Paul says we grow by being “rooted and built up in Him.” Both remind us that spiritual strength comes from staying close. Being rooted means trusting that steady connection matters more than quick results. Growth isn’t measured by how intense your effort feels, but by whether you’re still walking with Jesus—learning, listening, and remaining open to being shaped over time.

Walking It Out

Today isn’t about doing more; it’s about continuing. Paul invites us to walk with Jesus the same way we received Him—with trust, dependence, and gratitude. Jesus invites us to abide, knowing that fruit comes from connection, not pressure.

Choose one simple way to stay connected today. It might be reading Scripture slowly, offering an honest prayer, or pausing to notice where gratitude is already present. Growth happens when connection stays consistent. Roots form quietly, but they hold everything together.

Reflection Questions

[ ] Where do I feel pressure to grow faster than is realistic right now?

[ ] What does “walking with Jesus” look like in my everyday life?

[ ] In what area do I want depth instead of speed?

[ ] How might gratitude help me notice growth I’ve been overlooking?

Jesus, thank You for meeting me where I am and walking with me as I grow. Help me release the pressure to rush and trust the steady work You are doing in my life. Root me in You when I feel impatient or unsure. Teach me to stay connected, to grow with gratitude, and to walk with You one step at a time. Amen.
