“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will." — Ephesians 1:4-5 (NIV)
Think about the last time you felt like an "afterthought." Maybe you were the last one picked for a team in gym class, or perhaps you weren't invited to a dinner that everyone else seemed to attend. Those moments sting because they whisper a lie: “You aren’t wanted.”
We often spend our lives trying to "apply" for a sense of belonging. We polish our resumes, curate our
social media, and mask our flaws, hoping that if we are "good enough," we will finally be chosen. But God’s Kingdom operates on a completely different frequency.
The most staggering part of this truth is the timing. Paul writes that God chose you before the creation of the world. Think about the implications of that:
It wasn't based on performance: You hadn't done anything good or bad yet. You hadn't even drawn your first breath.
You were created with intention: You are God’s deliberate choice, not an afterthought.
It was for His "pleasure": He didn't choose you out of obligation or because He was short on people. He chose you because it made Him happy to do so.
You are not an applicant hoping to be accepted by God. You are a beloved child who was hand-picked before the stars were even formed. When you move through your day today, you aren't working for acceptance; you are working from it.
In what areas of your life are you currently "performing" to feel chosen or wanted?
How would your "to-do" list change today if you fully believed you were already God's favorite choice?
Father, thank You for choosing me. Forgive me for the times I’ve looked for my worth in the opinions of others or in my own achievements. Today, I rest in the truth that I am Yours and that You wanted me before the world began. Let that confidence change how I speak, how I work, and how I love others today. Amen.
